A buyer's guide to finished sumi-e painting kit contents across three tiers — beginner, gift/premium scholar — drawn from Guangdong Gumo Crafts Technology's in-house sets. Covers what makes a kit complete, how set-level packaging differs from single-item retail packaging, and how MOQ and bundling logic shape your order.
A sumi-e painting kit is not a box of loose supplies. Once a kit is finished and packed for sale, the buyer is judging a fixed bundle: the components inside, how they are matched to each other, the box they ship in, and the minimum order quantity behind it. This guide defines three tiers of finished kit from our published in-house sets and explains how set packaging and MOQ logic differ from buying the same items singly.
- A complete kit answers one question first: who opens it, and what can they do with it on day one?
- Our three tiers run from a student practice kit (MOQ 100 sets) to a gift-grade desk set with a certificate of authenticity (MOQ 20 sets).
- Set-level packaging is not single-item retail packaging — it is designed around the box, branding and component matching.
- Lower MOQ and longer lead time move together as tier and customisation increase.
What makes a sumi-e kit complete

A usable ink painting kit needs four working elements: something to make ink, a surface to hold ink and receive the stone, a brush to apply ink, and paper to paint on. A practice guide or instruction sheet is the fifth element, because a beginner opening the box needs to know what each part is for. A kit that ships an ink stone without a matching brush, or a brush without paper sized for it, is a collection of parts, not a kit.
The definition of "complete" therefore depends on who receives it. A student kit is complete when it supports practice without extra purchases. A gift set is complete when it reads as a finished presentation and the components look and feel matched. We build our in-house sets around that split rather than offering one universal bundle.
Three tiers of finished sumi-e kit
The table below sets out the three finished sets we publish on our product pages. Component grading, packaging and MOQ differ at each level.
| Tier | Kit | Contents | Packaging | MOQ | Lead time |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Beginner | Calligraphy Starter Kit Set (GMO-SDS-002) | Student-grade ink stick; practice inkstone; beginner brush; 30 sheets practice xuan paper; illustrated usage guide | Set packaging with component quality grading and AQL; school branding available | 100 sets | 25–35 days after sample approval |
| Gift / intermediate | Complete Scholar Desk Set (GMO-SDS-001) | Pine soot ink stick; Duan inkstone; wolf hair brush; 20 sheets Xuan paper | Custom magnetic-closure presentation box; set-level component matching and AQL; private-label branding | 30 sets | 35–50 days |
| Premium gift | Premium Scholar Desk Gift Set (GMO-SDS-003) | Gold-edge ink stick; selected Duan inkstone; mixed-hair brush; archival Xuan paper | Luxury gift box with custom branding; certificate of authenticity with edition number | 20 sets | 40–55 days |
All figures as listed on the respective product pages.
Beginner tier: the student practice kit
The starter set pairs a student-grade ink stick and a practice inkstone with a beginner brush and 30 sheets of practice xuan paper. That count matters for a classroom or distributor order: the paper volume should cover a practice term rather than a single session. The illustrated usage guide lets a school include the kit in a lesson without writing its own handout. School branding is available, which is what makes this tier a fit for educational distributors rather than gift retailers.
Gift / intermediate tier: the complete scholar desk set
Moving up a level changes the material grading and the presentation. Here the ink stick is pine soot, the stone is Duan, and the brush is wolf hair, packed with 20 sheets of Xuan paper in a custom magnetic-closure presentation box. The change that matters for buyers is set-level component matching: the components are matched as a set, not assembled from whatever stock is nearest. Private-label branding and a magnetic-closure box suit a gift retailer who wants the box to stay closed and present well on a shelf.
Premium gift tier: the premium scholar desk gift set
The top tier adds gold-edge ink stick, a selected Duan inkstone, a mixed-hair brush and archival Xuan paper, inside a luxury gift box with custom branding. It also ships with a certificate of authenticity carrying an edition number, and export documentation with valuation. The edition number is the piece that separates this tier from the one below: it makes each set individually documented, which is what a premium gift buyer is paying the higher tier for. MOQ is the lowest of the three at 20 sets, because the tier is aimed at limited gifting runs rather than classroom volume.
Kit packaging versus single-item packaging
Set packaging and single-item retail packaging solve different problems. A single-item page such as our Student-Grade Liquid Ink (GMO-LIQ-004) is sold as a retail-ready bottle with display boxes — 60 ml and 100 ml sizes, MOQ 300 bottles, 20–30 day lead time, 18-month unopened shelf life. The packaging decision there is about how the bottle looks and stands on a display; there is no component matching, because there is only one component.
A kit packaging decision starts with the box and works inward. Three questions separate the tiers:
- Does the box have to close and stay closed? The magnetic closure on the scholar desk set is a presentation feature that a plain carton does not carry.
- Do the components need to be matched as a set? The gift and premium tiers are inspected at set level, so a mismatch inside a box counts as a set defect, not a component defect.
- Does the set carry individual identity? Only the premium tier does, through the numbered certificate of authenticity.
This is also why a kit costs more to pack per unit than a single item: the box, matching and — at the top tier — documentation are part of the packaged product, not add-ons. For a gift retailer, the number to watch is MOQ against expected sell-through at that presentation level, not the per-component cost.
MOQ and bundling logic
Reading down the tier table, one pattern is consistent: the more customisation and presentation a set carries, the lower the MOQ and the longer the lead time. The starter set runs MOQ 100 sets at 25–35 days; the gift set runs 30 sets at 35–50 days; the premium set runs 20 sets at 40–55 days. The reason is the production sequence. A school-branded practice kit can be produced in volume and assembled from graded components, while a numbered premium set needs box branding, edition numbering and export documentation with valuation, which take longer per unit.
Bundling logic follows the same logic. If your channel is education, the beginner set fits because the paper count and the usage guide assume a class. If your channel is gifting, the gift and premium sets fit because the box and certificate assume a recipient. Ordering the beginner tier and repackaging it into gift boxes does not give you the set-level matching or the certificate — those belong to the higher tiers as defined.
Two practical points for a first order:
- Sample before volume. The starter set lead time is stated as 25–35 days after sample approval, so the sample step is part of the schedule, not an optional extra.
- Separate set MOQ from single-item MOQ. If you plan a mixed order of kits and loose product, the liquid ink MOQ of 300 bottles and the kit MOQs are separate thresholds and should be planned separately.
FAQ
- How do I know a sumi-e ink painting kit is complete for a school buyer?
- Check that it includes ink-making, a stone, a brush, paper and a guide, and that the paper count covers the intended practice period. The starter set lists 30 sheets of practice xuan paper and an illustrated usage guide, which is what makes it usable without a teacher writing their own handout.
- What is the difference between a sumi-e kit aimed at gifting and the same items sold loose?
- The gift and premium sets add a presentation box, set-level component matching and — at the premium level — a numbered certificate of authenticity. Those belong to the set as defined, not to the individual components.
- What MOQ should a gift retailer expect for a sumi-e kit?
- Our published sets start at 30 sets for the magnetic-closure scholar desk set and 20 sets for the premium gift set. Lead times run 35–50 and 40–55 days respectively, longer than the 25–35 days of the starter set.
- Can branding be added to a sumi-e kit?
- Yes at all three tiers. School branding is available on the starter set; the gift and premium sets accept private-label and custom box branding.
